Doubles Performance
An additional IBM AS400 computer was acquired in June 1998 to augment the original AS400, which went into service in 1992. The original system provided data management for all of the financial, accounting and material distribution requirements as well as the STARR Transportation management system through which car movements, billing, tracing and yard activities are monitored. As usage of the AS400 grew, and experience was accumulated, the computer became less and less able to efficiently serve all of the system requirements.
The new AS400, while less that one fifteenth (1/15) the size of the original unit, more than doubles the computer performance and significantly increases data storage capacity. The installation was accomplished with virtually no risk nor down time. Improvements in data processing were realized immediately, and they continue.
