The Clipper Portsmouth

Pan American Airways unveiled its vision of what airline travel is like for those who choose Pan Am flights to Orlando/Sanford or, in the future, Gary/Chicago when its “Clipper Portsmouth” was dedicated at a special ceremony in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on September 29, 1999. The gleaming white plane with the bright blue globe and lettering was the first in a line of reconfigured Boeing 727-200 jet aircraft which will feature a single class of service, the “Clipper Class”, and a flight crew augmented by an additional attendant. The 727-200 is redesigned to have 149 seats instead of 173, which will provide all passengers with extra leg room equal to or greater than many first-class seats on other airlines.

The dedication ceremony was held at Pan Am’s headquarters at Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and featured the christening of the aircraft by former Portsmouth mayor and now Pan Am Ambassador of Good Will Eileen Foley. Rather than champagne, a bottle of locally brewed porter ale from the Red Hook Brewery in Portsmouth provided the requisite foam and spray. The Portsmouth High School “Clipper Band” provided upbeat music and certainly underscored the vitality of the rejuvenated Pan Am.
